How to Get Steel in 100 Days at Sea: Metal, Essence, Glue

Updated 2026-09-02 · Roblox 100 Days At Sea

The short version: "steel" in 100 Days at Sea is just metal. The statue that says "I hunger for that which forges steel" wants 5 of any metal item dropped into the golden cuve in front of it; the "feeds fire" statue wants 5 of any wooden item. Armour pieces count too, since every armour is a wooden or metal item. Metal comes from junk floating in the water, from islands (oil rigs are stacked with crates, pallets and junk engines) and from the Magnet (30 metal, 10 wood, limit 2), which produces unlimited metal when pressed. Essences drop from almost every enemy and are only used as potion ingredients. Glue (listed as "Goop" in the crafting table) comes from ghost pirate corpses, 1 corpse = 1 glue. A Container Shelter is one of four container structures that each add +1 to your day multiplier.

Every material and where it comes from

The crafting table only tracks three resources: wood, metal and glue. Everything you throw into the crusher becomes one of them. The other rows are items that quests, machines and NPCs ask for.

How to get steel (metal) fast

  1. Skim the water around the raft. Wood and metal junk float past; drag it to the crusher on the crafting table.
  2. Clear the fisherman's island. It sits about 50 m from base, has some metal lying around, and freeing the Fisherman unlocks a fishing rod that pulls up seafood and materials.
  3. Raid the oil rigs. Locate them with transponders from radio tower islands. The Small Rig (4 rivals) holds 4 big crates, 4 pallets and 2 junk engines; the Big Rig (8 rivals) 5 crates, 5 pallets and 6 junk engines; the Huge Rig (15 rivals) 4 crates, 2 pallets, 2 junk engines and 2 metal beams. How much metal each item crushes into is not documented yet.
  4. Craft both Magnets at bonfire level 4. The wiki calls them "a priority to craft both, as most crafts require metal". Two magnets plus two or more sawmills give infinite everything except glue, and rescued survivors press the machines for you.
  5. Loot the cargo ship after day 5 for steel bars and fuel; the wiki rates that loot as early to mid game only.

The "I hunger for that which forges steel" statue

This is a Material Squid Island in the Ancient Squid quest line. Put 5 metal items of any kind into the golden cuve (they vanish as you drop them, and the 5 floor gems light up) and a gold tablet appears. The wood version reads "I hunger for that which feeds fire" and takes 5 wooden items; that island usually has trees to cut. If the island is bare, take items from a nearby island or from your machines at home. Collect every tablet and press the wall on the main squid island to summon the Ancient Squid boss.

Essences: what they are and how to use them

Essences are potion ingredients dropped by every entity except bosses. They roll, have collision and cannot go in your inventory: carry them in a sack or drag them, and keep them in a Storage Bin (12 wood). Piles of them lag the area.

EssenceColourLikely role (inferred from the name; community-reported, unconfirmed)
Attack essenceRedOffensive potions
Defence essenceBlueDefensive potions
Healing essenceGreenHealing potions
Utility essenceYellowUtility potions
Wacky essencePurpleWacky Potions

To use them, craft the Potion Table (tier 3: 5 metal, 10 wood, 1 glue) and drop any three ingredients in. Recipes stay hidden until crafted once, then remain unlocked in every future game; a combination that matches nothing gives a random Wacky Potion. Exact effects per colour beyond the names are not documented yet; see potions.

Best farms on the wiki: spam a red lever on the lever squid island (ghost pirates spawn behind you and drop essences plus corpses for glue), or spawn-kill aliens on the dynamite alien island instead of blowing up the UFOs.

Container Shelter and the other containers

A "container shelter" is a container-like structure that adds +1 day multiplier when placed on a wooden floor. There are four:

ContainerHow you get itCrafting cost once unlocked
Small ShelterCrafted at tier 11 metal, 5 wood (limit 1; the Crafting & Structures page lists 6 wood, so the wood cost is unconfirmed)
Container ShelterPurple chest on the Small Rig6 metal, 12 wood, 1 glue (limit 1)
Makeshift BuildingPurple chest on the Big Rig12 metal, 20 wood, 3 glue (limit 1)
OutpostPurple chest on the Huge Rig35 metal, 40 wood, 15 glue (limit 1)

Duplicates give nothing extra, and only the player who opened the rig's purple chest can craft that container. Place all four on the fisherman's island so ghost and Buku raids cannot smash them; if every copy of one type is destroyed you lose that +1. Their chests have a higher chance to drop armour than other chests. The Day count page calls the crafted one "Survival Shelter" while the Crafting page says "Small Shelter"; which name is current is unconfirmed.

Fisherman requests in order

The trades are identical and in the same order every game, and each player can complete them separately.

Feeding the Pump Jack

The Pump Jack (tier 3: 15 metal, 10 wood, limit 3) turns wood into a large gas canister. The crafting list says 2 wood per canister, the Crafting & Structures page says it needs 3 wood to work, so the exact number is unconfirmed. The wiki does not say whether you hand it wood directly; it does say rescued survivors press it, feed the bonfire with the output, and that it runs dry without sawmills. Once the bonfire is maxed, wrench fuel machines to free space. Full tier costs are on the crafting page.
